Correspondence from Frieda Harris to Aleister Crowley
[partial]
[29 December 1939]
Dear Aleister,
Know what you won't do shall be the whole of my Law!
I can bear many things, chilblains included, but I will not draw a lady like Aubrey Beardsley . . . Old Edwardian Indecency drawn by a lineal introvert I call him & none of his fillagree [sic] pattern-scabbing will make me endure to look at his lifeless ladies which make me vomit.
And how period he is, the product of small collection of intentionally vicious sillies. This master for me to imitate—in a work you assure me will be handed down thro the Ages!
. . . a poor feeble impotent tart with
a carnival mask for a goddess, for that is all Beardsley
could ever draw as a woman, Every line makes me squirm. it
is so unreal. . . . Don't write and tell me I am not
